REGRESO

AKAROA

My last trip in New Zealand has been to Akaroa which is a little harbour inside an extinct volcano. Kevin Keivns was a driver of the minivan shuttle. He loves song and he sung Po Kare Kare Ana quite well. While he was driving he taught me a nice maori song named E Toru Nga Mea, even though I didn´t like the lyric's of this song I enjoyed singing with him.

A woman realised my interest in photography as I was shooting photos to her house, and she came out to speak with me. She was so kind and she let me know that she was a primary school teacher. She used to live in Christchurch but now she lives in Akaroa because her house was quite damaged on the last February earthquake.

Go All Blacks!.

SPANGLISH IN NELSON

It was really difficult to leave Welington because the sea was so rough but finally I reached Picton harbour.

I met Noel and Cristina a few weaks ago and they invited me to stay in their home in Nelson because they are really keen to learn Castellano. Noel worked as an English teacher in Córdoba last year.

They showed me a lot of nice places in Nelson, Pohara beach or the Waikoropupu Springs, the most clear water ever in the world. You can see the rocks 16 m deep at the bootom. 14.000 litres of water rises from the spring every second. It was a nice walk where we enjoied a lot of old trees species.
Noel is really proud of his earthworms and he feed it every day with organic rubish to obtain compost.
The weather is absolutely diferent between Wellington and Nelson. While in Wellington it is often raining in Nelson it is always springtimes but the distance is not longer than 240 kms.
The sunday we were sailing in the morning and in the afternoon we went to a rugby much: Tasman Makos vs Otago, unfortunaly our teem lost the game in extra time. After the match we went to have some beer with friends and some kind “person” introduced me to a very well known Crusaider's player.
Thank you so much friends for sharing your city and your kind and warm accommodation with me. I hope to see you in Spain soon.
I stayed in Kaikoura a couple of days to see whales on my way back to Christchurch and I saw whales but I am not a very good sailor, I felt seasick and I fed the fishes!

WELLINGTON

I am still in Wellington, my sailing was cancelled today cos of the stormy conditions. It had snowed for the last two days and the wind was really strong, the sea is quite rough. So now I am waiting for good weather conditions to take the ferry to Picton.

I spent three days in Olivia's house with her boyfriend Oliver and Simon. They live together in a semidetached house and were so kind to share their home with me. But now it is over cos Oliver's sister is coming and she need the room. So I have booked a shared bed in a nice backpackers near the center city. We played cards every night I tought them "siente y media" and they tought me "Up and down the river". Thank you so much friends for your friendly and kindly accommodation.
The first day we went to Zealandia and we did a track and watched native birds. In New Zealand there are only native birds no other kind of animals, and the government has to eradicate pests to protect the ecosystem.
The second day we visited an interesting photo exhibition near the harbour and had lunch in a restaurant nearby. I had a wonderful lamb hamburger. I had never eaten it before, it was delicious.

Finally I went to the Te Papa Museum which is the most important in New Zealand. They had two special exhibitions about Oceania named “Early Encounters” and “Imagining The Pacific”

ROTORUA

I must apologize for the delay but it was difficult to me to write before now.I went to Rotorua a few days ago driving from Hamilton. The most interesting activity that you can do is to visit the Geothermal earth forces and enjoy the Maori Culture. I did both.
You can see in the photos the houses around the smoke, Every house gets its hot water from the earth, not only in a Maori neighborhood, all the city can keep warm theyr houses from the earth and of course to cook the food. The Maori usually cooked under the ground in ovens called hangi. It is delicious.
Nobody knows when the geysers are going to start so you need to allow up to one hour.

A long time ago were some differents Maori tribe which fought one against the other and before the combat they do a war dance. There are many war dances, not only the Haka, the most well known in Europe cos of the All Blacks. The warriors dance in front of the enemy to give themselves courage and give them as much fear as possible.
When you dance Haka you have to move your face, your eyes, your tongue, to hit your body with your hands, hit the ground with your right foot and of course to sing war song.
Last saturday, I saw on tv a rugby match, the All Blacks against the Australian national team. The New Zealanders danced the Kapo o Panga which is a very tough war dance. At the end the players threaten to cut the neck to the enemy. The faces of the Australian players were really terrified before kickoff the game and they lost the match.

AUCKLAND

Auckland is the most important city in New Zealand and the biggest one. It is located in a very dangerous volcanic area where 1.3 million people live. I booked my accomodation in a backpacker hostel near the center of town and went with Petra and Mu to have a nice dinner in a Indian restaurant. I will let you know more about this first day later on because the mornig was horrible.

The most important building is the Skytower that is 328 metres high. You can go up until 220 metres and I did it. It took 33 months to build, it is the tallest man-made structure in New Zealand and you can see in every direcction. The lifts travel at 18 km per hour and in only 40 seconds arrives at the top. I started speaking with someone asking him to take a photo of me when we both realised that we come from Spain. This was the first spanish guy I met in New Zealand after 32 days travelling. "Un madrileño muy majo".
The most exiting activity you can do in New Zealand is Skyjump. I am sure you are not going to believe me, but it is true. You can jump from the top of the tower, of course for money, but the most strange thing is that you have to wait cos there are a lot of people ready to jump even when it is quite expensive. They fall straight down for 11 seconds at 85 kilometres per hour!

I took a bus to visit the War Museum where I found the second spanish guy and after I met some more, but only a few. The most important section in the museum was a fascinating Maori cultural performance and all the Maorí exhibition. Unfortunately my camera ran out of battery and I couldn't take as many photos as I'd like.
My accommodation was in Jill and Geoff's friend's house, a very nice house and very nice people. The next morning we went to the harbour for a walk and in the evening we started travelling to Raglan.

FLOWERING WINTER

I felt quite happy in the morning, why? I don't know. I wish I have made some photos from the city center buildings which had damages and I did some of them, but finaly I made most photos from flowers, I thought "my second winter has flowers right now" and they are so beautiful. Here you are a video with a really nice song "Pornographer's dream" Do you know who are the singer? You should take headphone if you want to enjoy this music.

PUNAKAIKI

From now to the end of my New Zealand (Aotearoa) trip, I am going to write in my blog only in English. I must apologize about that but I need to think in English most of the time. I am getting used to dreaming in English, ha ha ha ha, even when I smile. I don´t care about mistakes. If you find them, let me know please, your checking will be welcome.
Speaking about backpackers, perhaps you wish to know some more about their way of live. To start with, they haven't got too much money because most of them are still students or just finished their university degree. They come from all around the world, of course... our first world. Students from poor countries can't afford to travel. In backpacker accommodation you can get all you need. You can cook your own food and keep it in the fridge or in the cupboard, of course you have to write your name and leave date near the food. If you are going to leave the accommodation you have to check out before 10 a.m. give back the key and get back your deposit.
How many people sleeps in a room? this depend, some times 6 or 8 o maybe 10 (new zealand people says /tin/), but nobody makes noise or handles your property. You must wash up all kinds of pot, like frying pan, knives, forks, spoons, glasses or whatever you have used from the kitchen. You can wash and keep dry your clothes in a washing machine for a few coins. “If you have not a shilling don't stop and go step on it” ha ha ha!
Today I am in Christchurch again, spending time running up and down a nice creek, reading, writing and feeling... earthquakes, but they are not big enough to be dangerouse. Next Friday I am going to fly to Auckland to start North Island trip. Usually I feel fearful of flying and for that reason I enjoy listening to this song before take off it make me be courageous. If you are going to fly in a few next days... you should watch this video, it's works!.  FOTOS PUNAKAIKI BACKPACKER
